A Model of Lexical Access of Ambiguous Words

Recent psycholinguistic work in the study of lexical access has supported a modular view of the process. That is, lexical access proceeds indepedently of the sentential context. Herein we describe a connectionist model of the process which retains modularity, explains apparent anomalies in the results, and makes empirically verifiable predictions.

Lexical processing of ambiguous words: dominance or associative strength?

Four experiments examined the role of meaning frequency (dominance) and associative strength (measured by associative norms) in the processing of ambiguous words in isolation. Participants made lexical decisions to targets words that were associates of the more frequent (dominant) or less frequent (subordinate) meaning of a homograph prime. The first two experiments investigated the role of ass...

Rhyme Priming of Pictures and Words: A Lexical Activation Account

Orthographically/phonologically related primes have typically been found to facilitate processing of target words. This phenomenon is usually explained in terms of spreading activation between nodes for orthographically/phonologically similar words in lexical memory. The phenomenon was explored in a series of studies involving the manipulations of prime and target type (word or picture) and pri...

Processing Ambiguous Words: Are Blends Necessary for Lexical Decision?

A previous computational model (Joordens & Besner, 1994) has suggested that during lexical access, ambiguous words tend toward a blend state; that is, network activations settle into an incorrect state that is a mixture of the multiple representations of the ambiguous item. It has been suggested that this blend state actually aids lexical decision (LD) for ambiguous items as the blend state cre...

lexical decomposition awareness and its effect on delayed receptive and productive recognition and recall of vocabulary knowledge of morphologically complex english words: an iranian efl context

abstract lexical knowledge of complex english words is an important part of language skills and crucial for fluent language use (nation, 2001). the present study, thus, was an attempt to assess the role of morphological decomposition awareness as a vocabulary learning strategy on learners’ productive and receptive recall and recognition of complex english words. so 90 sophomores (female and ma...
